Ribbon embroidery

Practicing

I am practicing my stitches but am getting my ribbon too tight I think.  It keeps twisting.  It is not laying pretty on the fabric like in the pictures I am looking at for inspiration.  I am slowly but surely getting there.  Actually, slowly is what I should be doing to make sure the ribbons all lay right.  Anyhoo, it has been fun learning.

  4. Your stitching is beautiful. Practice, practice, practice, right? I'm not an expert by any means, but I do know that keeping your ribbon to a maximum of 15-18 inches helps to keep it from fraying and getting twisty. You may need to stop every so often and let the ribbon dangle, untwist, and loosen a bit. I do believe you are a natural for this medium! Can't wait to see how you use it and make lovelies from it!

  7. Hi Shelly:
I agree with Mona...Keeping your ribbon a little shorter will help. You can also use a laying tool...something as simple as a large needle (like the kind you use to tuck in yarn ends on a knitting project - they're blunt) to stroke the ribbon close to where it comes up through your fabric. It will straighten out the ribbon for you. Hold the ribbon with your laying tool hand as you take your ribbon needle back down through the fabric to create your stitch. It takes a little practice, but is worth the effort.

You've reminded me that I promised a little tutorial on this. I'll work on photos this week for you! In the meantime, you're doing just fine. Don't stress on it. Remember, you're just learning and it's supposed to be fun. ;-)

    Hugs,
    Donna

  10. I have always thought ribbon embroidery was so pretty and I don't see it very often. I have a bag a girlfriend found at an antique shop and gave to me that I just love. I posted all about the fabulous items I received from you for the rosette swap today on my blog. I was in awe!!! Hope you get a chance to come on over for a visit. xo Lynn
